1. Background
English is one of the most important international languages used in education, communication, and technology. However, many students still feel nervous and lack confidence when speaking English in public or during classroom activities. Most students understand grammar and vocabulary, but they rarely practice speaking in real situations.
According to Stephen Krashen (1982), language learners improve their language ability through communication and meaningful interaction. This statement shows that practicing English actively is very important for students in developing their speaking skills and confidence.
In many schools, English learning is often focused more on theory than communication practice. As a result, students become passive and afraid of making mistakes. Therefore, an English conversation club is needed to help students improve their speaking skills in a fun, active, and supportive environment.
The “Speak Up Club” project is designed to encourage students to practice English through conversation activities, discussions, games, and public speaking exercises.
